It’s hard for me to pick just one favorite tree out of all that inhabit the Anacostia River Tributary Trail System, but if I absolutely had to, this Winnie-the-Pooh tree would be it!
What makes this tree so great is that you don’t have to find your way to Hundred Acre Wood; it’s located in the Northwest Branch Anacostia River woods. Enter the trail from the end of Lamberton Drive, hang a right when you reach the first trail terminus, and follow the Northwest Branch until your legs get tired. That’s about when you’ll spot it – right when you feel like you need to sit down for a rest.
Winnie wasn’t home the last time I visited. Tigger and Piglet told me that he was either out looking for some honey, or back at my own house.
“What?” I asked.
“You are Christopher Robin, right?” Piglet inquired.
“My name is Christopher, and a lot of people have called me Christopher Robin since I was a boy,” I answered. “I do love Winnie-the-Pooh, but I don’t think I’m the real Christopher Robin.”
“You look real to me,” Tigger said, elevating five feet into the air with a boing!
“Me, too,” Piglet added.
Roo hopped by and shouted, “Hey, what are you guys doing with Christopher Robin?”
“He’s –,” Piglet began. “Never mind. We’ll explain later.”
I crawled inside the tree just to make sure Pooh wasn’t playing a game of hide-and-seek, but he wasn’t there. I looked all over the woods with no luck and returned home. And guess who was sitting in my library with a big grin on his face?
